FAQs
About Holistic Massage
Q: What is it?
A: A holistic massage is a personalised treatment that considers the client's physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, not just aches and pains.
Q: How is it different from a regular massage?
A: It is tailored to individual needs and may incorporate various techniques based on what the client needs at that moment, rather than following a fixed routine.
Somatic Bodywork and Massage therapy
Q: What is the main difference between general massage therapy and somatic bodywork?
A: General massage therapy primarily focuses on the physical manipulation of muscles and tissues to relieve tension, reduce pain, and promote relaxation. Somatic bodywork incorporates principles of body awareness, addressing the connection between the mind and body to release deep-seated stress and trauma patterns, often using guided awareness and emotional expression techniques in addition to touch.
Q: Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or somatic therapy inadvisable?
A: Yes. It is important to inform your practitioner of all health conditions and medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, depending on the nature of the condition, it maybe advisable to obtain clearance from your GP before starting a session.
Q: How often should I receive sessions?
A: The number of sessions required varies depending on your individual needs, health history, and response to therapy. Consistency is often key to seeing benefits, together we can create a plan that is supportive for your individual needs.
The Session Experience
Q: What should I wear during the session?
A: This can vary.
• Massage: Most clients undress to their comfort level and are properly covered by sheets and blankets during the entire session.
• Somatic Therapy/Bodywork: Loose, comfortable clothing is often preferred, as these sessions are offered fully clothed and you maybe encouraged to move during the session.
Q: What to expect for my first session?
A: Your first session will be about establishing your needs, we will have a chat about the initial consultation to see if there are any changes. We will also confirm your intentions and treatment plan to support your needs.
Q: What happens during a session?
A: Sessions are client-centred and unique. They may involve hands-on bodywork, guided awareness of bodily sensations, simple movements, and dialogue between us to address any emotions or memories that arise.
Benefits and Effectiveness
Q: Can these therapies help with anxiety, stress, or PTSD?
A: Yes, both massage and somatic therapies can be very beneficial for managing symptoms of stress and anxiety by releasing physical tension and calming the nervous system. Somatic approaches, in particular, are designed to address the physiological effects of trauma and have been found to be helpful in managing PTSD symptoms by interrupting traumatic nerve patterns.
Q: Are these a substitute for professional mental health services?
A: Somatic bodywork and massage therapy can complement professional mental health services but are not a substitute for the care of a licensed psychotherapist, especially for severe trauma. A holistic approach often involves coordination with mental health specialists.
Q: What is the main objective of somatic work?
A: The goal is to help you develop a deeper mind-body connection, self-soothe more effectively, and regulate your nervous system to release trapped stress and trauma patterns, leading to greater overall wellbeing and resilience.
